Dear Parents/Guardians of the 2018 All County Chorus students,
The events that occurred this weekend are truly unique. It is unfortunate that the concert had to be cancelled, but it became obvious that this was necessary when campus security informed me that the campus was being closed due to the power outage. Thank you so much for responding as promptly as you did. Once the decision was announced, the music teachers banded together based on each ensemble, and got students and their belongings organized and safely back to the cafeteria so they could be picked up.
The college experienced a partial power outage due to a transformer blowout on Cottekill Road shortly after lunch in Vanderlyn Hall, where we utilize two rehearsal areas. We were able to continue rehearsing, as the cafeteria and the Student Lounge have windows, and half power came back on almost instantaneously. The gym still had full power at that time.
On my way to the gym, the power went completely off on campus. I later learned this was when Central Hudson came to the scene of the blown transformer. At this point, campus security informed me that the campus was being closed. I explained to each group what had happened, and that the concert had to be cancelled. Please know that student safety is our number one priority, and it is a testament to everyone involved for remaining calm in such an unusual situation.
Power appeared to come back on shortly after I made the announcement. Some students approached me about still having the concert, but campus officials stated that this was not full power, and that it would probably be cycling on and off in different areas of the campus for the next two hours or more. We are very grateful that we were not in the middle of the concert in the gym when power went out.
We are all disappointed that the concert had to be cancelled, especially for the seniors. Participation certificates, programs, and additional T-shirts will be available through your school music teacher. You will be reimbursed for the cost of a CD if you purchased one.
Thank you for your patience and understanding, and for your continued support of music in our schools.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me at the address below with any questions.
Best regards on behalf of UCMEA Executive Board and members,
